This Kindergarten music curriculum comprehensively addresses the requirements outlined by both state and national music education standards.
Specifically, it is organized into four distinct UNITS, each designed to cover one of the essential content areas: SKILLS, SING & PLAY, COMPOSE, and CONNECT.
Each element in the Kindergarten Music Curriculum:
In this grade students will begin with quick, easy SKILLS warmup activities, like echo clapping, echo singing and listening games.
The students will get their first exposure to the elements of music through these experiences of music.
If you’re an experienced teacher, you can teach these activities yourself, with the framework and guides setup showing the progression.
If you’re not experienced, then you can use our included tutorial videos and recorded tracks. You don’t even have to sing!
Echo Clapping
In the echo clapping activities in this grade students are very gently building up their beat and rhythm skills.
If teachers don’t have experience, they can use the included prerecorded track, and can echo along with the children.
If teachers are experienced in music they can use the structure and framework of the program and build on it as they work on the students’ rhythm skills.
Echo Singing
Singing is important in any music instruction. In the echo singing activities in this grade students will sing, perhaps for the very first time!
If you’re teaching this and you’re not a music teacher – it does not matter if you can’t sing! This program includes all tracks prerecorded, that you can echo with your class.
If you’re teaching this and your are a an experienced music teacher, you can use our sheet music examples and included backing tracks.
Listening Games
One of the most important areas to build up in early music instruction are listening skills.
In this kindergarten music curriculum we build up listening skills through our regular music listening games.
Students will listen to a 1-2 minute music example, without knowing the piece’s title. They will then use their imagination to describe and discuss the piece before learning more about it.
“Every music class needs to be built on a foundation of children being involved in actively singing and playing music”
This quote from our founder, Janice Tuck, is one of the fundamental philosophies of our music programs.
Every lesson contains a SING & PLAY song, and children learn the song in a consistent way for five lessons. Each song contains singing, playing untuned rhythm instruments and playing tuned instruments.
Introduction and singing
Every song is given context with an introductory video. However, once you are familiar with the song you may not need to play this video for the class, and you can teach all the lyrics and actions yourself.
In the kindergarten music curriculum there is a lot of action songs, where children will do actions in time with the music. This helps build children’s sense of beat and rhythm. It also makes them become a little more confident to use their voices and sing.
Singing
Once students are familiar with the basic words and actions, you can use our singing play-alongs to accompany the children in the classroom. This is like having your own personal accompanist, playing the music as you need. You can even use our tempo control to slow the music down if the children can’t get all the words in!
Of course, we know that children at this age often cannot read words, let alone read sheet music! Students will learn the songs through imitation and repetition at this age. However, the words and sheet music are presented on the screen so that children learn through exposure. The sooner children are exposed to words and notation, the better!
Untuned rhythm instruments
Once they can sing the song, students will also learn to play untuned percussion instruments with the song.
Instead of playing randomly, in our program students will follow animations to play in time and begin to follow music notation through exposure.
Again, we do not expect children to read the music, however being exposed to it in a consistent manner helps build children’s musical ability very quickly.

Tuned instruments
In this grade children will also get their first chance to play tuned percussion instruments.
This begins very simply, with children playing only one note. As they get used to following music and playing a single note part, they can split into groups and play notes at different times.
Gradually through the program they will build up to playing more than one note.
In the COMPOSE unit of this grade children will explore the elements of music for the first time, and learn to manipulate them to create their own compositions.
We begin with experiencing sound and silence, beat, dynamics and pitch, and then create sequences of events which become their own compositions.
They will also explore stories, do group chants and create music for specific purposes.

In the CONNECT unit of this grade students will learn to listen with intention to music from a variety of styles.
Students will complete a simple worksheet in each lesson with a drawing task related to the music they have heard.

How much does it cost?
We will share that with you below.
However, before we do that we invite you to consider a more important question:
How much is YOUR TIME worth?
We know that most teachers aren’t paid for the many, many hours they spend preparing lessons in their own time. However, we believe that teachers like you should be, as any time spent preparing lessons takes away from valuable rest and relaxation time, and time with your family.
So, even conservatively if we were to value every hour you spent preparing at $50 per hour:
Your task: | Value of your time: |
---|---|
Time spent planning 40 Lessons (1 hour per lesson) |
$2000.00 |
Time spent finding, arranging sheet music and creating screen presentation for 8 songs (6 hours per song) |
$2400.00 |
Time spent creating 20 fun composition tasks to match the curriculum (1 hour per task) |
$1000.00 |
Time spent finding 20 school-appropriate listening activities, coming up with prompting questions and creating worksheets (4 hours per activity/worksheet) |
$4000.00 |
Total cost of YOUR TIME to teach without this program: |
$9,400.00 |
