A personal story from Janice Tuck, creative director of the Fun Music Company …

Dear music teaching friend,

I’m just a music teacher like you! I’ve been through highs and lows in my career, I’ve taught in every type of school from special needs schools, private and public schools. I’ve taught private instrumental, classroom and made a business from teaching preschool classes … so in music teaching I’ve been there and done it all!

I graduated from teachers college in 1992, and while many of my colleagues were posted to nice city schools, I was posted to a rough town in the outback of South Australia. I arrived there with nothing, no resources except what I’d personally put together, which wasn’t much … and I soon discovered that the staff and the admin of the school weren’t going to help me much!

The only way I had to get through was to work hard. Really hard! I worked incredibly long days planning, and within two years of this routine I was totally burned out.

I knew there had to be a better way, because I knew that the things that made the difference was not the lesson plans or the worksheets, but the freedom that I had when I had the lesson plans handled, so that I could focus on the children. I really hoped to make a difference for these children – I could see the potential if I could just spend time focusing on them and communicating with them, but I was stuck working really hard to just create the resources.

Thats when I had the vision of the Fun Music Company…. way back then! nearly 30 years ago! I’d never even heard of the internet at that time but I saw the vision back then of a place full of teaching resources that would be so complete and have all the bits and pieces required for the teaching would be just handled, so that I could focus on the students.

Of course it took me a great many years of teaching in all different situations from preschool, primary and high school to realize that the actual creation of that is a lot more difficult, but I held that passion in my mind from that very first day teaching in the outback of South Australia.

You see over the last five years in particular I’ve made it my mission here at the Fun Music Company to really understand curriculum and how it relates to our subject of music, and how to get this handled for teachers.

And our breakthrough moment really came when we looked at every single curriculum in the world, and found that there are four broad terms – or strictly speaking four categories of activity in music lessons which represent the essence of every statement in the curriculum. So that is our four-UNIT system – it is taking everything in the curriculum and bringing it down to simple, actionable steps that are clear and understandable, by us as teachers, and by our students.

Introducing the Fun Music Company Curriculum

The Fun Music Company curriculum is a complete music program for Elementary school general music classes.

It is specifically designed to meet curriculum requirements, while at the same time making lessons engaging and fun for children.

It does this by structuring activities around the four areas commonly found in every music curriculum in the world: AURAL, SING & PLAY, COMPOSE and CONNECT.

In this program you will have everything you need for a fun, engaging and exciting music program for elementary school classes.

It is a structured program with progression through the grades, yet it flexible and adaptable for mixed grade classes.

The four-unit system of the Fun Music Company Curriculum

Music Curriculum Aural

Each grade level contains a carefully programmed set of aural lessons, which is your key to teaching the elements of music to your students in a hands on way, with very little preparation time.

The students will learn about essential elements of music such as rhythm, dynamics, tempo and timbre as they have fun and learn through exposure.

In this program, students view aural as a game! Its a fun activity to get students into music in a very simple way.

Teachers who are feeling uneasy about presenting this material can use the pre-recorded tracks, or experienced teachers can extend the activity by using their own clapping and singing with the backing track provided.

Music Curriculum Sing and Play

Each grade level includes a complete SING & PLAY unit, which includes folk song arrangements which have been very carefully selected and arranged by classroom music experts. These songs are the solution to classes with many different abilities, as they cater for all levels within the one piece.

There are videos showing each step of the process, from the introduction to the song through to playing as a classroom ensemble.

Sheet music is not needed, as everything is displayed on the classroom whiteboard!

All the singing videos include light-up lyrics to make it really easy, plus the sheet music is always displayed along the bottom of the screen.

Music Curriculum Compose

This program includes a complete Composition unit with step-by-step lessons which is your solution to meeting the composition requirement in the curriculum, while having great fun with the students while they create their own music.

Students will create their own material in an age-appropriate way, starting with simple graphic notation scores and group activities in the younger grades, progressing through structured improvisations and composition frameworks.

In the older grades students will begin incorporating the use of technology, and can use whatever devices are available to them to create their own music.

Music Curriculum Connect

CONNECT is a full listening program, which is your solution to getting students to listen to a variety of musical styles, so that you can expand their awareness and develop knowledgeable musicians.

Students will watch a short youtube video, and then participate in a range of age-appropriate response activities.

They will answer a few factual fill-in-the-blanks questions, and then there will be a few classroom discussion questions to prompt a deeper level of understanding of the music.

Benefits of the Fun Music Company curriculum

Designed to meet your curriculum requirements

The Fun Music Company Curriculum has been designed to meet your curriculum requirements and provide a fun, engaging experience for your students at the same time.
Every part of the Fun Music Company curriculum was written specifically to meet the requirements of the Australian National Curriculum and its state-based equivalents.

The Australian curriculum has four content statements, and the four UNITS of the Fun Music Company curriculum are designed to match them perfectly. They are AURAL, SING & PLAY, COMPOSE and CONNECT.

We have also referenced the various state-based curricula including the NSW Creative Arts syllabus, the Western Australian Curriculum, The Queensland Curriculum and the Victorian Curriculum.

We have also included assessment templates and rubrics for every unit at every grade, so that you can show clear progress in each area of the curriculum.

Every part of the Fun Music Company curriculum was written around the requirements of the US Common Core arts standards, so if you choose this program you are truly meeting and exceeding the standards found in the Common Core.

There are four categories in the Common Core, and eleven anchor standards in those categories. The categories are Creating, which is fully covered in our COMPOSE unit, Performing/Presenting/Producing, which is covered in our SING & PLAY Unit, and then Responding and Connecting which are both covered in our CONNECT unit.

We have drilled down in detail through the eleven anchor standards, and the descriptions for each and every grade to make sure that everything is covered in this curriculum.

Step by step lessons

Includes step-by-step videos for you to play in the classroom, so that even if you aren’t experienced in teaching an activity all you need to do is play the video and follow the instructions.

In the SING & PLAY section our Singing introduction video provides the background to the song, teaches the action and any Kodaly inspired pitch and rhythm concepts.
Our Singing performance video then provides the sheet music and words in a format that you can press play and go! You never need to worry about forgetting the words again!

Then our Untuned percussion introduction video teaches every percussion part by itself, and students will use body percussion to silently become familiar with the rhythms before trying them on the instruments with the Untuned percussion performance video.

Then students can learn each tuned percussion part with our Tuned percussion introduction videos to each song, where they will see each part being played on the screen, and be introduced to music notation through exposure, and then they can perform them together on the tuned percussion performance and complete ensemble videos.

In the COMPOSE section of the curriculum a step-by-step video precedes each and every activity, which means that you can virtually teach this part of the curriculum with no additional lesson preparation at all – watching the video and then guiding the students through the activity on the following screens.

We have consulted with experts in leading music education pedagogies like Orff and Kodaly and incorporated the best from these systems in the lessons, so whether or not you’re familiar with those methods you can incorporate the best ideas.

Kodaly inspired folk songs

We have researched and utilised some of the most well-known and educationally based folk songs from the repertoire.

In our singing introduction video, we help with some of the more difficult teaching concepts for you, so even if you’re not experienced teaching music you’ll be able to give your students the gift of these amazing music education experiences.

If you are an experienced Kodaly inspired teacher, you can be confident that the song repertoire will support you, and this provides a framework for you to build on with all the educational concepts covered.

Orff arrangements ready to go!

We have consulted with experts in the Orff Schulwerk and developed arrangements with a variety of drone and ostinato parts.

With tuned and untuned percussion we demonstrate each and every part, and students learn through the experience of being involved kinaesthetically with body percussion and action before getting onto the instruments.

These arrangements are a springboard for you to extend and adapt to your classroom and provide lots of opportunities for yourself and your students to unleash your creativity.

How does it meet the requirements of my curriculum?2021-04-22T01:39:47+00:00

We have designed this program around the requirements of the Australian National Curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum from the USA, and the English National Curriculum. We have also looked at and analyzed every other curriculum document which users have told us they are required to use, and each one has remarkably similar requirements in the area of music. Please click below for a sample curriculum matching document, showing how our programs meet the requirements of the curriculum. If you have a different curriculum you are working with, please contact us and if possible we will provide a matching document for you showing how our program can be used to meet the needs of your curriculum.

We have designed this program around the requirements of the Common Core Curriculum, used in many US states. We have also looked at many of the state-based curriculum documents which our users have told us they are required to use, and each one has very similar requirements in the area of music.

How much content is in the program? How many lessons will it last?2020-10-09T13:40:09+00:00

We have structured all the material into ten lessons. Does this mean that the program will only last ten lessons? Absolutely not! We chose ten lessons because this was an easy way to structure the content that would make it feel achievable for everyone.

We don’t make our lessons have to fit a certain time frame, because every teacher and school has a different length lesson, and a different expectation of what they can fit into a lesson. We certainly know that there is a lot more material in one of our lessons than could be covered in a typical school lesson. If you were proceeding by lesson and you wished to make the curriculum last an entire year, simply plan to make each lesson last four weeks, and it will cover a 40 week school year.

Each lesson has activities from each of the four units: AURAL, SING & PLAY, COMPOSE and CONNECT. Therefore if you proceed by lesson you’ll be doing one activity from each of these aspects in turn, in a continual rotation between the four aspects of the curriculum. However, you also have the choice of proceeding by unit and focusing all your energy on one particular aspect at a time. Our SING & PLAY, COMPOSE and CONNECT materials generally have enough in them in each lesson that you could focus on just that aspect for a full lesson.

So there is enough in the full unit to last for more than ten weeks of SING & PLAY, ten weeks of COMPOSE and ten weeks of CONNECT. Together with warmup materials, and preparing for school concerts this should be enough for the majority of schools for an entire year’s program.

I don’t have much technology in my classroom. Can I still use this program?2020-10-09T13:41:01+00:00

We always get questions like: I don’t have an interactive whiteboard – can I still use this? and Can I use my iPad?.. and all those sort of technology-related questions.

Well … for this one … we are pleased to announce that the answer is yes!

Yes, you can use it, no matter what technology you happen to have in your classroom.

We’ve set this up as an online system. It is set up as a type of webpage that you access in the classroom. Its fully setup online, so there is nothing to download or install or anything for these programs, you simply login to our new members area, choose the module you want and away you go.

Its setup to work on any device, and yes, even iPads!

For this program, all you need is a screen, and some sort of device that can access the internet attached to it. A computer with any internet browser will do it or any sort of iPad or tablet device.

Why is there an annual subscription?2020-10-09T13:42:02+00:00

The Fun Music Company curriculum has two parts: the online screen presentations and the teacher’s guidebooks and CDs.

The on-screen presentation part of the Fun Music Company curriculum is delivered online – this means that no software ever has to be installed, and nothing has to be downloaded.

The flip-side of this benefit for you is that it must be a subscription service, because we as the service provider become responsible for keeping it running and updating it for all the technology changes that happen, making sure it works on every device that is used in schools.

I’m sure you’ll appreciate with such a large amount of video content in the program that potentially could be used by hundreds or even thousands of schools every day around the world, that the cost of delivering this service in the future could be very substantial, so therefore we can’t sell lifetime access to this – as we can’t guarantee that it can work well into the future.

However we are going further than that – we are committed to constantly reviewing, refining and improving the online content as we get feedback from users, so that the curriculum becomes better year after year. This is only possible because it is an online-delivered program. If it were a one-time purchase it would exist the way it does forever.

If you choose to purchase the edition with the books and CDs, you can keep them forever. You can continue to use the songs in them and the teaching ideas as long as you would like – they are yours.

However if you want to use the online presentation parts after the first year: the sheet music videos, the classroom videos and interactive activities then you need to renew every year. If you don’t want to use this part of the program, then you don’t have to renew.

This is different from a program you might choose to use once or twice and put back on the shelf. We envisage that it would be used every single day in the classroom, with those sheet music videos being played over and over and over again, and in that context then our annual fees are not expensive at all.

Our vision for this curriculum is a program that is alive!, We expect that it is constantly getting better because people are using it every day, providing feedback and we are refining it, and this is only possible if we make it a subscription service.

We have created this program because we love music education: It is a life-long commitment for us to help music teachers all around the world make music lessons fun and fulfilling. If you choose to join us in our curriculum program we know that you and your students will benefit from this commitment and the input from all the experts who had input into the program, and all the other teachers using it as well.

Is this the same as your ‘whiteboard music lessons’ or older material?2020-10-09T13:43:01+00:00

NO… this is all completely NEW!

We started out thinking that we would re-write “whiteboard music lessons” so it matched the curriculum better – but we ended up creating a whole new program. Whiteboard Music Lessons still has a place, and for some people it may work better or even in combination with this, but this program contains totally different content – you won’t find the same things duplicated from our Whiteboard Music Lesson programs if you currently use them.

How much music training or experience do I need to use this program?2020-10-09T13:43:56+00:00

We are confident that you’ll be able to use the program, no matter how much experience you have teaching music. The program includes hundreds of videos, designed to be step by step, so you can learn the parts along with your students. The lesson guides are designed to help you, and whether or not you get the printed version you’ll be able to access them whenever you need them.

We do this without removing the core important educational philosophies of music education, and music specialists can use this material as their base and expand on it, as the materials are designed with a solid base of Orff and Kodaly inspired approaches.
