What is the Fun Music Company Grade One Music Curriculum?

On this page is a complete Grade 1 Music Curriculum.

It is specifically designed to meet curriculum requirements, while at the same time making lessons engaging and fun for children.

It does this by structuring activities around the four areas commonly found in every music curriculum in the world: SKILLS, SING & PLAY, COMPOSE and CONNECT.

A short overview and preview of each of the units in this grade:

Students will begin working with basic skills in music, such as rhythm and pitch.

They do this through easy and fun games such as echo clapping, echo singing, note recognition and listening games.

The students will be gently introduced to the elements of music through these experiences.

Imitation Singing

Students will warm up and grow in their vocal skills by singing back easy phrases.

Experienced teachers who would like to sing can follow the sheet music, and expand these activities for the students.

However, teachers do not need to be able to sing, as there are fully recorded tracks which can be used.

Imitation Rhythm

Students will participate in a variety of imitation rhythm activities, where they will listen and imitate the rhythm they have just heard.

If the teacher is feeling confident and prepared with this activity, then they can begin with our suggestions and expand the activity. If not, they can use the recorded track.

Listening Games

One of the most important skills we can build in students is the skill of listening.

We begin this in grade one through the use of some listening games, where students will listen to a short piece of music, and then discuss and think about what the title may be, before it is revealed to them.

Here at the Fun Music Company, we believe that every lesson should include opportunities for students to be involved in singing and playing music.

This the foundation that this program is built on. Every lesson contains a SING & PLAY song where children will build on their skills. They work on a song for five weeks and sing, play untuned instruments and tuned instruments. They can then put all the parts together into an ensemble.

Singing

We always begin with singing.

At grade one we know that students are still developing the skills of reading and writing, so the songs are very simple, with repetitive phrases they can memorize.

We always have the words and the sheet music present on the screen, so that children are learning through exposure.

Untuned percussion instruments

Students will develop a strong sense of beat and rhythm through learning parts for untuned rhythm instruments.

They will not just play randomly, they will follow notation and play specific parts with the on-screen animations.

Playing tuned instruments

In the grade one music curriculum, students will learn tuned instrument pieces beginning with just one note.

Students can use single pitched instruments such as Boomwhacker® pitched percussion tubes, chime bars or handbells. They can also find the single notes on xyophones or other instruments.

In grade one they will progress from using one note to using two notes, playing one with each hand.

In the COMPOSE unit of this grade children will develop their understanding of the elements of music. They will use this understanding to create their own pieces, working as a big group and individually.

We begin with creating soundscapes using technology and then use instruments to create soundscapes and record them using simple invented notation styles.

In the CONNECT unit of this grade students will listen to a wide variety of music styles and learn about instruments of the orchestra, world music styles and popular music through the years.

Students will complete a simple worksheet in each lesson with a few questions and a drawing or colouring task.

Your time is the most valuable asset you have.

There is, rightly, a lot of talk about the cost of living these days.

However, the truth is, every month, you can earn more money. If you have a job, people pay you for that job to turn up and teach.

The reality is though: the job of teaching requires you to spend hours and hours planning, unless you invest in a curriculum program like this one.

They don’t pay you to spend hundreds of hours planning!

That TIME, if you choose to spend it, is yours.

It is the time that you should be spending with your family. It is the time you should be spending exercises, relaxing, and walking in nature to replenish your mind and your body.

That TIME, if you spend it, never comes back.

Money, however, if you spend it, gets replenished. Next month, there will be a new pay check. The month after that, another one.

I believe that YOUR TIME is worth far more than money!

The money we’re asking for a single grade of this program works out to less than $3 per week. That’s less than a single cup of coffee.

Your school should pay for this in their budget. It is a very reasonable request to make of them.

If they can’t or won’t, then the cost to you directly at less than $3 per week is still worth it.

Wouldn’t that be worth it to have every lesson you teach prepared and ready to go?

Try it out today with no risk …
