The Fun Music Company Grade Three Music Curriculum is designed so that teachers do not have to plan lessons.
They can if they wish of course, and full control of the content is still in their hands. However teachers can choose a lesson, have quick review of the content, and begin teaching.
This system allows teachers the flexibility to focus on delivering the best possible lessons for their students, knowing that their curriculum is fully covered.
SKILLS training is very important in Grade 3, with lots of repetition of echo rhythm and echo singing activities. Plus fun ‘roller coaster’ singing activities are introduced, working on the skill of pitch control.
The students use their ears to learn essential elements of music such as rhythm, dynamics, tempo and timbre.
Grade 3 SKILLS development also introduces some fun ‘note guessing games’ which reappear through the grades with increasing complexity.
Echo rhythm
In Echo rhythm students listen to a rhythm, and clap it back.
Gradually more complexity is added in this grade. As well as rhythm, other elements of music are varied such as dynamics and tempo.
Roller coaster singing
In this grade students will learn to control pitch with their voices through a series of singing exercises, known as ‘sirens’ by singing teachers.
Students vary their pitch up and down in response to the roller coaster moving up and down in the animation.
Breathing exercises
Effective breathing is a critical skill for singing.
However, deep diaphragmatic breathing is also a life skill that students will benefit from, no matter if they sing or nor in later life!
In this grade students do a variety of fun exericses to improve the depth and length of their breathing.
Music education needs to be built on a foundation of children being actively involved in singing and playing music.
This is no more needed than at Grade 3, where students are still needing a lot of fun in their songs, but need to be challenged as well.
There are videos showing each step of the process, from the introduction to the song through to playing as a classroom ensemble.
Singing
Students will sing a variety of fun songs in this grade.
There are traditional folk songs, such as A Ram Sam Sam, Tideo and Debka Hora. In these songs, students will sing and do actions to reinforce the beat in the music.
Rhythm Instruments
In the grade three music curriculum students will play a range of untuned percussion rhythm instruments.
They will learn specific rhythms, and follow sheet music displayed on the screen, and cover multiple curriculum outcomes.
Not only that, its lots of fun at the same time!
Tuned instruments
In this grade students will play a variety of tuned percussion parts, that all feature easy, repetitive patterns.
Students will learn parts by memory, and also follow notation on the screen.
If you have enough instruments, these parts are able to be played with everyone playing tuned percussion. Alternatively they can be combined with untuned percussion and singing to make a full ensemble.
In the COMPOSE unit from Grade 3 we begin with body percussion, and students work as a class and then in smaller groups to create their own ideas and then notate them.
Then the students begin improvisation – first using just one note. Then they move to two notes, and then three, before learning to notate these ideas with simple stick style notation.

In the CONNECT unit of Grade 3 students will listen to a wide variety of music – from Beethoven to Michael Buble, from Brahms to … Mr. Bean!
Through listening to a wide variety of music in this unit, children will identify purpose and meaning in music and discover how the elements of music are used to convey these meanings.
