Have you ever wondered how to start with creating a music lesson for kindergarten? Do you start with playing instruments, planning, writing, reading, … etc?
In this article, I will help you create a kindergarten music lesson and make it EASY and FAST to implement with your classes.
If you’ve ever been lost trying to create kindergarten music lesson plans, then this is the page for you!
Anybody can read and follow a basic recipe, right?
It’s a universal language.
Which is exactly why we created the Fun Music Company kindergarten music curriculum.
In this training video starting at Kindergarten level, I’ll show you the core basics and STRATEGY behind how to get children singing then playing effortlessly in just a few easy steps. (Think of this as laying the solid groundwork for any grade)
Step 1: Watch this introductory video of the kindergarten music lesson.
In this part of the kindergarten music lesson, see how your students can quickly learn the words and actions for an entire song. It takes just a few minutes!
The music plays softly in the background. We don’t mention it in the video, but it’s there as a natural part of the lesson. The children absorb it through exposure. They see the music, hear it, and interact with it without needing to read or fully understand it yet.
Images on the screen help children remember the words.
We’ve spent years researching and refining this teaching method. Once you understand how to set up this kind of lesson, you can use it with any song. It’s an easy way to enhance your music teaching—no need to start from scratch!
Step 2: Watch this second video to find out how singing can quickly progress into learning rhythms.
Q: When was the last time you sat in on a Kindergarten music lesson and saw how a teacher moved from one activity to the next to teach something new?
A: Probably not often!
If teaching something new in music makes you nervous, you’ve likely heard advice like “be confident” or “just try it.” That’s not very helpful, especially when you’re stressed. That’s why the Fun Music Curriculum kindergarten program gives you detailed, practical guidance you won’t find elsewhere.
For example, you’ll see how a lesson flows naturally. It includes teaching a fast, specific rhythm pattern that fits the music. It looks simple enough for even the youngest students to follow.
In the video, musical terms like note names and rhythms aren’t mentioned to the children. Instead, they learn by watching and doing. It feels easy because it’s taught in a quick, fun way.
Later, this rhythm is transferred to instruments, making this step essential.
In this sneak peek of the Fun Music Company Kindergarten Music Curriculum, you’ll see exactly how to make rhythm learning while singing effortless!
Step 3: Discover how to play TWO instruments with the music by watching this third video.
After watching this video, students will learn to play castanets or tambourines in time with the music. They will also be able to play along with a backing track.
First, you’ll see how to teach the castanet part. This involves taking two rhythm patterns and transferring them onto an instrument. If you don’t have castanets, no problem! You can use woodblocks, claves, or any similar instrument.
Next, students should practice the rhythm using body percussion. This step helps ensure they succeed when they use the actual instruments. For castanets, students can tap their fingers with their thumb as a pretend practice.
Once they master one part, they can move on to the tambourine part. Finally, they can split into groups and play together as an ensemble.
These videos are just one of many lesson plans for singing and playing instruments in our music curriculum program that demystify the process of how to start with singing a song and growing it into a full set of playing parts.
As you can see, this material is totally different from anything you’ll find in other programs and it continues to teach music with a consistent format, language style and a proven set of time-tested pedagogies.
